Description

Originated in the state of Andhra Pradesh, Leather Puppetry is believed to have been exercised since the 12th century. In olden times, colorful leather puppets were created to perform shadow puppet shows and mostly consist of characters from Ramayana and Mahabharatha. Because of the translucent nature of the material, lighted puppets would glow in the dark emitting vivid colors, attracting more and more audiences to the show. Puppetry is still practiced in many parts of India, performed during special occasions or festivals like Diwali.  With time, the art form has undergone changes to include leather puppetry lamps and jewelry which like olden times are truly magnificent to look at and impart a cultural significance to the owner.
